.- Thousands of people, including Christians, Muslims, and Hindus, gathered in Calcutta yesterday to mark the ninth anniversary of the death of Blessed Mother Teresa.

They came to visit her tomb and the motherhouse of the Missionaries of Charity, the religious congregation which she founded, reported Indian Catholic News Service. Some were seen prostrating before the tomb, some people lit candles. Many stood in silent prayer.

Earlier in the day, Archbishop Lucas Sirkar of Calcutta presided at a Mass, concelebrated with several other priests.

The extent to which the elderly nun touched people of all faiths was evident in the numerous events organized across India.

An inter-religious service was held in Gujarat, where several inter-religious flare-ups have occurred in the recent past. Bishop Thomas Macwan of Ahmedabad urged participants to imitate the life of Mother Teresa and to transcend the narrow confines of sectarianism, reported ICNS.

Mother Teresa died Sept. 5, 1997 of heart failure.  The beloved nun was beatified in October of 2003 and her cause for canonization is moving forward at a remarkable pace.

Later in her ministry, Blessed Mother Teresa, did see the importance of sharing her Faith. So much so, she asked Fr. Hardon to create a catechetical program for the Sisters of Charity. It was her hope to properly catechize her sisters so that they would share the Catholic Faith.

Dear Lord please grant me the grace that I may live my life as she lived hers.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta's entire life was based on the tremendous love she had for Jesus Christ Our Lord and Saviour. When ever Mother Teresa tended to the poor, sick and dying on the streets and slums of Calcutta, India she saw Jesus Christ. Her entire life and motto were clearly defined by what Jesus says in scripture, "What you do for the least of my children you do unto me." This little Albanian Roman Catholic Nun never asked any questions about the faith of those she helped and never tried to impose her faith on them, and because of her great love and compassion for the poor and dying she and her nuns were able to help those most in need despite the fact she was a Roman Catholic Nun in a country where the vast majority of the population were of other religions. Let us all pray that this living Saint while she was alive on earth is officially canonized in the very near future. Mother Teresa Pray for us!
