.- The U.S. bishops’ conference has set up a website to help mark the Year for Priests by providing prayers and other resources. “Please pray for our priests that they might always be faithful to their sacred calling,” the site says. The site includes Pope Benedict’s message for the Year of Priests and the announcement of the celebration’s plenary indulgence in English and Spanish. It also provides prayers for both priests and laity in PDF format so that they may be downloaded and printed for diocesan and parochial use. The Secretariat plans to provide monthly articles by prominent Catholic women who will write about their “faith and trust” in the priesthood. Other activities for the Year of Priests include a gathering of priests in Rome as well as a retreat on the national level. Information on the retreat will also be provided through the website, which is located at http://www.usccb.org/yearforpriests/index.shtml Subscriber comments:

Priesthood: Generosity in Love
When we give a gift to someone, people would say how generous we are depending on the gift they receive regardless whether its value affected our budget or not. We can be wealthy and provide an expensive gift (though its value has no affect on us), and on the other hand we can be poor and provide a cheap gift but means a lot for the receiver because he knows that the cost of this gift can affect the food on the table for our children. In the same way, we give gifts to God but the difference between God and human being is that He always know what these gifts mean to us.
In the Bible, if we want to see a generous person then we need to look at the poor woman who gave the two small coins, all what she had to live on, into the treasury (Luke 21:1-4); she did this because she loved God so much. Such generosity in love to God is shown in the heart of the mother who would consecrate her first born child to God (not knowing if she is going to have another one or not), fill his heart from childhood to work for God and become a priest. She does not want grandchildren or to see him as a bridegroom, the dream of every mother, but she rejoices in seeing him marrying Jesus on his ‘Ordination Day’ and having an unlimited number of children through the people he serves and would be their shepherd to do Jesus Christ Will, i.e. to make God known to them and heal their souls to praise God, give Him thanks and bless His Holy Name.

In prayer, the Holy Spirit gave the idea to use the letters of the word "Priest" to emphasize what we need to do:
P - Pray, R - Respect, I - Invite, E - Encourage, S - Support, T - Thank.

No man is forced to be a priest in the Catholic Church. It is a choice made for the love of God. “Many are called but few chosen” Those chosen to the priesthood, freely and lovingly sacrifice having a wife, children and worldly goods so they can with an undivided and joyful heart give themselves totally to God.
The main duty of a husband is to his wife and children. The only duty of a priest is to give God to the world and to take the world up to God, by his life of sacrificial prayer and works. The Church bases her mandate of priestly celibacy on the example of Jesus Christ in His own life. There is a direct connection that exists between Christ and the priest. A priest’s chaste celibate love for the church is a sign of Christ’s presence to the faithful. He makes Christ present through his sacramental ministry at the altar and in the confessional and is acting, not simply in the name of Christ, but in the person of Christ. He is “another Christ”, whose faithful and total gift of self to the church as spouse is an integral part of his priestly life thus making him a spiritual father to countless souls. Scandal has led many astray, we pray they repent. The many holy priests working in silence and obedience are ignored. In this Year of the Priest, we want you to know that we love you and pray that God give you the grace, strength and courage to live your priestly calling. An active young woman, I speak on behalf of many. We do not want married priests.

This is wonderful We do need to make people aware that the Priesthood is a Gift from God that we need to treasure and pray for. These men are human beings called by God to give their lives for the Faith and they are truly special and need our daily prayers.God Bless our Priests!

The Holy Spirit speaks to us to awaken within us a respect, love and concern for all priests made tangible through our prayer support. With so much assault by the enemy against the priesthood our prayers are needed so badly. I looked at the pictures of the new priests and ask God to protect them, strengthen them and help them remain ever faithful. My mission is to pray for priests faithfully. My visit to Medjugorje in 2000 was when our Blessed Mother put it upon my heart to pray for priests. Let us do so everyday!
God bless Yours in Christ Marianne

"The Secretariat plans to provide monthly articles by prominent Catholic women who will write about their 'faith and trust' in the priesthood."
Am I the only one who finds this transparent attempt at political correctness sickening? What is the point of offering articles written exclusively by women? Is the message, "Sorry ladies, we can't ordain you, but as a consolation we'll post articles written only by women. See? We really do care!" This type of phoney feel good foolishness only reinforces the lie that the Church has reason to apologize for shortchanging females in its doctrine concerning a male-only priesthood. This is typical liberal-think in action; the do-gooders who dreamed up this stupid idea will no doubt congratulate themselves for their pastoral sensativity, while the feminist renegades they were attempting to placate will come away having their misguided bitterness confirmed.

After just reading an article about a priest who was falsely accused of sexual improprieties and what he had to endure from chancery officials and others in the investigation, I hope this website indicates a willingness to heal the wounds of falsely accused priests, many of whom were thrown under the bus, so to speak. Of all Institutions in the world, the Catholic Church and its leaders, the bishops, should be the most kind, loving, just, and understanding of its own, priests, other Christs, who continue God's work of salvation. I pray that St. John Vianney will intercede for all priests and bishops, in their continuing growth in holiness. Lord, give us Holy priests. Our Lady, Queen of the Clergy, pray for them.

I hope that the prayers of this year will bring in new vocations especially those who are not secretly at odds with the Vatican on celibacy and life issues. Also those that have unwholesome tendancies need to be delt with; the scandals are a huge obstacle.
