Pablo Tac was born in the 1820s at the Mission San Luis Rey, the largest of the California missions, in what is today Oceanside, California. He was a member of the Luiseño tribe, and he wished to become a Catholic priest.

He traveled by ship to Rome to study for the priesthood. While in seminary, Pablo created a dictionary for his native language and a written history of his people and life, as he knew it, on a California mission.

This week on CNA Newsroom, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, we share Pablo's remarkable story, and revisit the stories of Squanto and Nicholas Black Elk.
