CNA Newsroom 'We Shall Overcome'

Sister Thea Bowman (Courtesy of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration) and Venerable Augustus Tolton (/ New York Public Library).

This week on CNA Newsroom, we share the stories of two Black Catholics on the path to sainthood.

Fr. Augustus Tolton was born into slavery in 1854, but escaped at the start of the Civil War. He became the first well-known African American Catholic priest in the United States - but not without a lot of hardship.

Sister Thea Bowman was born in the 1930s and died in the 90s - just thirty years ago! She was born free, but she still experienced racism - even within the Church.
