Conference on Faith and Evolution to be officially announced at the Vatican

On February 10, the Vatican will officially announce the details of the international conference called “Biological Evolution: Facts and Theories. A critical appraisal 150 years after ‘The Origin of Species’," which will take place from March 3-7, 2009.

The conference, organized by the Pontifical Gregorian University and the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) and sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Culture, will be presented  by Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture;  Prof. P. Marc Leclerc S.J. of the Pontifical Gregorian University, who is also the Director of the event;  Prof.  Giuseppe Tanzella-Nitti of the Pontifical University of the Santa Croce; and  Dr. Saverio Forestiero, Professor of Zoology at the Roman University of  Tor Vergata, and member of the organizing committee.

The event, which is part of the Vatican-sponsored "Science, Theology and the Ontological Quest" (STOQ) project, will explore the commonalities between a moderate Evolutionism and Faith.

Some American academics have complained that renowned scientists from the "Intelligent Design" school of thought have not been invited to participate.
