Fifteen formerly homeless veterans organize food drive

Men living at St. Joseph’s Veterans Home in Denver, Colorado are coordinating an August 7 - 8 food drive to assist those in need.

The drive, organized by 15 formerly homeless veterans, will benefit the Catholic Charities Community/Emergency Assistance Centers.

Food collection will take place at St. Joseph’s Polish Church in Denver both days from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Patti Carr, site manager of the Byers Place Emergency Assistance Center, noted that food donations are usually much lower throughout the summer months.

"We’ve seen the demand for food baskets increase from 500 baskets a month at each center to about 1,000 baskets a month.  Here in the metro-area, the number of individuals and families that need help is extremely high" she explained in a press release.

Items with a long shelf life are high on the priority list including: peanut butter, jelly, pasta, tomato sauce, canned vegetables, rice, beans, cereal, canned and dry soups, tuna and macaroni and cheese.

The veterans are also asking for personal items to distribute such as: shampoo, bar soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, laundry detergent, diapers and baby wipes.
