• First Reading

  1 Samuel 1:1-8
  

  1There was a certain man of Ramathaʹim-zoʹphim of the hill country of Eʹphraim, whose name was Elkaʹnah the son of Jeroʹham, son of Eliʹhu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Eʹphraimite.

  2He had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninʹnah. And Peninʹnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

  3Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinʹehas, were priests of the LORD.

  4On the day when Elkaʹnah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninʹnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters;

  5and, although he loved Hannah, he would give Hannah only one portion, because the LORD had closed her womb.

  6And her rival used to provoke her sorely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb.

  7So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.

  8And Elkaʹnah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

  12What shall I render to the LORD for all his bounty to me?

  13I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,

  14I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.

  15Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

  16O LORD, I am thy servant; I am thy servant, the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast loosed my bonds.

  17I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.

  18I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,

  Mark 1:14-20
  

  14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,

  15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.”

  16And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.

  17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.”

  18And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebʹedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.

  20And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebʹedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him.

  Ezekiel 33:12-16
  

  12And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness; and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins.

  13Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in the iniquity that he has committed he shall die.

  14Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ yet if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,

  15if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

  16None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right, he shall surely live.

  6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

  9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

  10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

  15O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.

  17The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

  Luke 15:3-7
  

  3So he told them this parable:

  4“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it?

  5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

  6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.’

  7Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
